Uncertainty in the global oil sector and declining crude oil production in Nigeria might force industrial unions to seek dialogue to avert economic disaster.
In a move led by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), workers in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) are being talked into seeking alternative resolutions to enable the country to sustain current oil production and related activities.
Recall that NUPENG earlier, this week, issued an ultimatum, asking the Federal Government to address some critical issues within two weeks. The development raised the possibility of fuel scarcity across the country as the festive season draws closer.
At a meeting in Abuja, yesterday, NUPRC promised to collaborate with the two oil and gas unions to foster industrial harmony and smooth operations in the sector.
The Commission’s Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, during a meeting with presidents of the unions, Festus Osifo (PENGASSAN) and Williams Akporeha (NUPENG), said the government will do everything in its power to ensure peace, in the interest of the nation.
He said the government will continue to promote equity in the affairs of the Commission, in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
The union leaders assured Komolafe of their readiness to work with the commission, even as they reiterated their belief in dialogue as a means to resolving industrial conflicts.
