After spending a harrowing 170 days in incarceration, National Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), Mr. Rowland Olonishuwa, has publicly expressed heartfelt gratitude to individuals and associations who stood by him throughout the ordeal. In a powerful message laced with emotion and deep appreciation, Olonishuwa acknowledged the unflinching solidarity, sacrifices, and compassion shown to him by colleagues, friends, family, and fellow media professionals.
In what he described as “a journey through uncertainty, fear, and resilience,” Olonishuwa broke his silence following his release, commending the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and its National President, Alhaji Alhassan Yahya, for their doggedness and commitment. According to him, Alhaji Yahya’s extraordinary show of leadership, including sacrificing the comfort of beginning Ramadan with his family to remain engaged in resolving the matter, was a gesture that will remain indelible in his heart.
He extended equal appreciation to the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists, NGIJ, led by its National President, Mallam Abdulrahman Aliagan, for their financial support and consistent moral encouragement. Notably, he praised Mallam Aliagan’s frequent late-night calls and guidance, as well as his decision to delegate NGIJ Vice President (Investigation), Comrade James Ezema, who attended nearly every court sessions in Lagos on Guold’s behalf.
“Their solidarity during my darkest moments rekindled my belief in the power of unity among journalists,” Olonishuwa noted.
Equally deserving of praise was the Guild of Digital Journalists (GDJ), under the chairmanship of Mr. Opeyemi Adeoti. Describing them as his “rock of Gibraltar,” Olonishuwa lauded Adeoti’s exceptional commitment, particularly in supporting his family during his detention. “Opeyemi went the extra mile by serving as my surrogate to my family and friends,” he said.
Olonishuwa also recognized the roles played by the Kwara State NUJ Chairman, Mallam Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, and members of the union, as well as Mr. AbdulRazaq Ahmed Abiodun of NUPPROW, who he thanked for their visits, financial aid, and moral support. He extended his appreciation to the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Kwara State chapter, especially the National President, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, for their solidarity.
Significantly, he commended Madam Stella Din-Jacob for her motherly role in resolving the “quagmire” and praised media activist Dare Akogun for his unwavering dedication to fairness and justice, regardless of political interests.
Olonishuwa further recognized the contributions of Comrade Tayo Ayanda, Kayode Adeoti, and his twin brother, Jide Obafemi, who “ran specialized errands” on his behalf. Adeyemi ‘Dekunle Obadimu was celebrated for serving as his “eyes, ears, and mouth” throughout his incarceration.
A long list of individuals were also thanked for their financial and emotional support, including Prince Richard Akanmode, Olusegun Olajide, Ola Elijah Olorunsuwa, Ayo Joseph, Comfort Yakub, Kamaldeen Aliagan, Elisha Olatunji, Bolaji Isreal, Quadri Olowolagba, Akinwale Kasali, Tayo Irantiola, and Funmilola Dipe. The One Love group and members of OGHS ’97 also earned his gratitude.
In a deeply personal section of his message, Olonishuwa expressed immense appreciation to his family: Pastor Joseph Olonishuwa, Mr. Richard Olonishuwa, Chief Olukayode Olonishuwa, and his son ASN II Olonishuwa Femi, for their financial, moral, and spiritual support. He gave special recognition to his immediate support system — Olori Debra Abidemi, Fikayomi, and Melody Olonishuwa — for remaining steadfast amid the crisis.
Olonishuwa concluded his statement with a reflection on the spiritual and personal lessons learned during his incarceration, thanking his “eternal Dad” — a reference to God — for the strength to endure the ordeal and for giving him a story to tell.
