The Chief Executive Officer and Director, Ingenious Toddlers’ Daycare, Abuja, Jummai Shelleng, has called for a total overhaul of the education curriculum to meet the demands of modern times.
Shelleng, who expressed concern over the quality of education in the country’s public schools, said: “Things must change and government must be ready to do so.”
Speaking during the school’s graduation ceremony in Abuja, Shelleng said that the education system in Nigeria is static and public schools still use outdated curricula.
She said they must move with the trend and time to catch up with the demands of the 21st century.
She said: “Government needs to invest in the education sector. It also needs to help the private schools, because Nigerian system makes it difficult for entrepreneurs in any field to thrive. The education system in Nigeria is static and things have not changed, government schools still use the outdated curriculum, they need to move with the trend to meet the demands of the 21st century. Government should copy what the western world is doing and how they are helping the sector and replicate the same in Nigeria.
“Education sector in Nigeria needs plenty of work and the private schools are here to bridge the gap. Before setting up a school, you must have a clear vision of what you intend to achieve. For me, every year is a new goal, a new vision, I don’t do the regular curriculum for 20 years, we upgrade our curriculum every year and try to meet the needs of every child, and I grow with the kids, learn from them and they learn from me.”
Shelleng described the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as very pathetic, stressing that the issue has lingered because most of the people in leadership have their children schooling abroad.
She said: “Government needs to do something, urgently, to resolve the problem to ensure that students get back to school. What is happening is that their kids are all schooling abroad and they don’t give a damn about what is happening here, you can’t have your kids abroad, but one day, the system will catch up with them and they will realise that this is the only country that we have.
“They need to do the right thing. How many Europeans or Americans come here to school? We are there boosting their economy. Everything they get over there can be done here. We have the resources to make Nigeria better than any other country, but unfortunately, we are greedy.”
