Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) rose from a meeting yesterday and resolved to set up a committee to resolve the post- primaries crises rocking the party.
The BoT members, it was gathered, also raised concerns over the situation in which the North continues to occupy top leadership positions in the party at the expense of the South, insisting it won’t promote peace in the party.
This happened as some BoT members loyal to the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, stayed away from the meeting.
Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, former deputy leader of the Senate, Abdul Ningi, disclosed that the peace committee comprises all members of the BoT. He said the committee had begun its work by immediately visiting the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
He said: “We have set up this committee to interface between warring factions, particularly the acrimony that is taking place between the presidential candidate and Wike. Every BoT member is a member of the committee. I cannot tell you the grievances and the time frame.”
On calls for the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu to step down, Ningi said: “We have not even discussed any issue of anybody stepping down. We discussed what we discussed, and what we discussed was what I told you.”
MEANWHILE, calls for the removal of Ayu took another dimension, as ‘Ayu must go’ protesters, yesterday, stormed the party’s national secretariat.
The protesters claimed that Ayu lacks the capacity to lead PDP to victory in 2023 because of the way he had allegedly mismanaged its affairs in Delta State. There have been conflicting court orders regarding the candidate of the PDP in the state.
